Magne Furuholmen and Dovecot Studios 'Glass Onion' 2014. Tapestry. Handwoven wool and cotton. 218 × 158 cm. Edition of 2
Magne Furuholmen first visited Dovecot Tapestry Studio in early 2013 to consider a tapestry project. A rewarding and thought-provoking collaborative process followed, with Magne Furuholmen (b. 1962) first creating a new unique woodcut print design for a tapestry called Glass Onion.
This print was derived from his series of ten large format woodcuts known collectively as Norwegian Wood, first showcased in his exhibition KUTT at the Herne Onstad Art Center in Oslo in 1995. This body of work was closely linked to jazz and his father’s musical history and constituted a breakthrough for Furuholmen as a visual artist at that time.
Glass Onion was woven at Dovecot in summer 2014 and formed the centrepiece to the exhibition Peeling a Glass Onion in 2015. During further insightful visits to Dovecot, Furuholmen embraced the notion of exposing his work to the craft and perspective of others with a different focus to his own.
