Peter Saville and Dovecot Studios, 'After, After, After Monarch of the Glen' 2012. Tapestry. Handwoven wool and cotton. 213 × 151 cm. Edition of 5

After, After, After Monarch of the Glen is a 21st century tapestry that celebrates the iconic painting Monarch of the Glen, 1851 by Edwin Landseer, and its representation by other artists and designers in a wide range of media over 150 years. Woven at Dovecot, an internationally renowned tapestry studio, this work highlights Scotland’s commitment to traditional skills and craftsmanship.

The tapestry was commissioned by Dovecot Studios in 2012 in collaboration with art director and graphic designer Peter Saville (b.1955), and Paul Stolper Gallery. Saville’s design for the tapestry is based on the iconic Scottish painting Monarch of the Glen by Edwin Landseer (1802-1873), with further inspiration from pop artist Sir Peter Blake’s (b.1932) own interpretation of Landseer’s work in 1966.

Blake is renowned for repurposing images from advertising, as well as combining pop culture and fine art images to explore the boundaries of the two. Saville has cleverly drawn on Blake’s approach in his own appropriation of both the 1851 and 1966 versions of the Monarch of the Glen, as well as the latest translation into tapestry.
