The poster was produced to coincide with the Jeremy Deller’s exhibition at Paul Stolper Gallery in 2004. Upon accepting a residency at CCAC Wattis Institute in San Francisco Deller spent his honorarium on a vehicle, a twenty-year-old jeep with a bullet hole on the driver’s side, to travel the Golden State. He then bought five acres of desert property near Death Valley, California, the ‘Melancholy Ranch’, where he made a live recording of 10 William Elliot Whitmore bluegrass tracks in the 95° Fahrenheit heat. Paul Stolper Gallery published a limited edition of 40 vinyl singles of the 10 tracks, on one side of each a picture disc with an image taken by Jeremy on his travels in the US, on the other side, 9 of the 10 singles together making a portrait of William. The 10th single shows the track listing of the songs.
