John Dove and Molly White
The memory of my first wood-engraving of a skull from 1959 led me to re-examine the context of this in terms of how the world has changed throughout time. We had several files of disaster and tragedy - some from the 70's. There were various pictures of missiles and A-bomb explosions. The most important bomb picture was the Bikini Island test of 1956 given to us by the Sunday Times/Guardian cartoonist, Richard Yeend - the print was in full colour so we immediately made colour separations and silk-screens. This image was used as a T-shirt in mono but when we designed the "Exploding Mickey" 1975 and The "Nuclear Sunbather" 1975 prints, we used variations of full colour.
The collection of skull images included belt buckles and badges I'd found in Portobello market while I collected second-hand 45's every Friday. There were some Nazi badges too. We have been absorbed by the effects of Pollution since our beach combing ventures of the 90's, We were shocked to learn that Coca Cola sells more than 100 billion single-use plastic bottles each year with many ending up in landfills and in the ocean. It's yet another dark shadow of our times.
The most strange and dark episode related to all this, was a fiend of ours (thought he was a friend) handed me a black paper bag with a skull in silver on the front "Aloha" was written under. He said he found it in the gutter on his way over. This guy was always dabbling in Black magic history so we suspected he was laying some bad vibes our way - after all, we were in competition in the T-shirt creative world. I traced the design of the bag to a shop in Honolulu. But the weirdest thing was, it was the same shop that the murderer of John Lennon purchased his gun (will never utter that man's name - John Lennon was my hero forever). The dark side multiplied - just before John's shocking assassination we had produced a T-shirt of John's Hand-written words to the song "Help" as a Black print on a black shirt. John Lennon was murdered a week later and somehow we felt we had been partly responsible and quickly withdrew the shirt and burnt everything... but I kept a copy of the song.
The other images in the TIME? Collage were mostly from war journals and history books. Some pictures of the Italian catacombs and awful photographs of the aftermath of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
The "Time?" collage came together in a couple of days and nights. It Felt as if it was being created by someone else.
I hung the collage in our hallway. Everyone who visited were enthralled by it, I made an enlargement to print on a large canvas.
