from Christie's 22 MARCH 2018 | LIVE AUCTION 15723

Irène Lagut’s led a bohemian existence from a early age. In 1908 in Paris, just 15 years old, she met a Russian lawyer who took her to Saint Petersburg for her 18th birthday. Shortly after, she became the lover of a young Grand-Duke, Prince Bogdanov, yet she fled from her Russian palace back to Paris, where she was hired by a music-hall in Montmartre in 1913 in the spring of 1916, Picasso fell madly in love with Irène Lagut. They had even decided to marry. At the last minute, when they were going to meet his family in Barcelona, she returned to Paris. Picasso and Lagut however would remain intermittant lovers until 1923.
Around the same time she had also met the artist Serge Férat and was his partner until 1921.
After being introduced to Georges Braque in 1913 by Serge and his cousin Hélène Oettingen, Lagut began to focus on painting and through the latter’s network within Paris’ bohemian circle, Lagut joined the artistic scene of the French capital, meeting the "voice" of avant-gardism such as Maurice Raynal, Blaise Cendrars, Marc Chagall, Fernand Léger, Albert Gleizes, Modigliani, Max Jacob and Sonia Delaunay. Her career as an artist continued to flourish in the Parisian arts hub, meeting Roger de La Fresnaye, Jean Cocteau and the dealer Léonce Rosenberg. She exhibited her works at the Salon des Artistes Indépendants, in shows alongside the Golden Number artists and in 1923, and later in 1928, André Level’s Galerie Percier hosted two solo exhibitions for Lagut.
