Alastair Mackie, Complex Systems, installation shot

Alastair Mackie reconciles the formal with the conceptual in a generous body of works that challenges the deep-rooted separation between animal and human, and exposes the clichés still hampering our understanding of man’s relationship to the natural world (Coline Milliard).

The bones of cuttlefish have been collected from beaches and processed in to geometric components. These have been pieced together to create a veneer of material. In mathematics and nature a complex system is a composition made up of interconnected parts that as a whole exhibit one or more properties.
